Organist and Pianist in Atlanta, GA

ABOUT

Steven Wooddell is a musician in the Rome, Georgia. He grew up in Roanoke, Virginia and started taking piano lessons and then eventually organ, clarinet and saxophone. Taking organ lessons gave him the opportunity to play for services first at the church his family was attending, then to branch out and start filling in at other churches when their organist was away. He also got to accompany other high school students on piano and play in jazz band on saxophone and the local youth symphony on clarinet. Having the chance to be diverse in musical experience while young has continued to influence him today. He wound up finishing North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston Salem where he studied organ with Dr. John Mueller. Right after high school he was given a grant to study in Lyon, France with Louis Robillard at St. Francois De Sales. The organ at the church was an original 19th century organ by Cavaille-Coll that made a deep impression on Steven as it was so much warmer and richer than the organs he had grown up hearing. So often organ suffers a bad reputation as either harsh and loud or distant and quaint- this instrument proved that the organ didn’t have to be either of those things. Steven then studied with Todd Wilson at the Cleveland Institute of Music and with Larry Palmer at Southern Methodist University. He took a few years off in between to work at Sewanee where he got to play for daily services at their Episcopal seminary and for the excellent college choir at the school. More importantly he had the good luck to meet his wife while playing a piano duet part for an orchestra concert there. He now lives with his wife and three children in Rome, Georgia. He works as an organist and pianist in Rome and the greater Atlanta area.
